Women and men share many of the same health concerns, but they also have some concerns and needs that are unique to themselves. 

To make sure you’re taking care of those issues that only affect people with female sex organs, you need to regularly seek women’s health care. A few concerns specific to women include:

If you’re a woman, you should have a well-woman exam once a year. During your exam, your Premier Family Medicine team member examines you to ensure that your reproductive system is healthy. Typical well-woman visits include:

• A vitals check
• Examinations of the breasts and pelvis
• Measurement of height, weight, and body mass index

Starting between the ages of 13 and 15, every person with a vagina, vulva, uterus, and/or breasts should begin scheduling well-woman visits. 

While you’re there, you can talk to your doctor about any concerns you have, particularly those related to reproductive health and healthy relationships. Examples include sexually transmitted diseases, birth control status, sexual health, and heavy menstrual flow.

Depending on your age, your well-woman visit also may include screening for breast cancer and bone density loss.

A pap smear is a test that your doctor performs once every three years to check your cervix for abnormal cells. Most women also get a pap smear once every three years.

To get a sample, your doctor opens your cervix slightly by putting a metal tool called a speculum into your vagina, swabbing the outside of your cervix with a soft brush or special stick, then sending the sample off to the lab.

Abnormal cells or changes to cervical cells can be precancerous. If your Premier Family Medicine team member finds abnormal cells, they remove them. This prevents potential cervical cancer over 95% of the time.
